Welcome, A Long Way Gone Readers!
By today, you should have read Chapters 1 through 6 in the memoir. I would like you to complete the following two activities:
First, click on this link and choose an article for background reading. Since this is your first background article, you should choose one that relates to the memoir you are reading. For future assignments, you may choose any from the list. Add your comments about the article to your student page. (Be sure to label this clearly.)
Next, (also on your student page) write a journal response to the reading section you just completed. This should be at least two to three paragraphs, and might include the following ideas:
- What is your general response to the reading? Did you enjoy reading it? Was it difficult to read?
- Were there any references made by the author to events, people, or places (or even vocabulary) you need or want more information about?
- What connections can you make between what the author is describing and things you have experienced, witnessed, read, or watched? Remember that connections can go beyond the superficial: while not all of us have experienced war, we all understand fear.
When you complete these assignments, you should use any remaining time to read the next section in your memoir OR check out www.freerice.com-- practice your vocabulary skills and have rice donated to the UN World Food Program to help end world hunger!
