Welcome, Kabul Beauty School readers!

By today, you should have read through Chapter 4 of the memoir.  Here is your assignment for today:

1.  If you have not done so, set up a student page for yourself for this book.  Be sure to tell me what name you use so I can give you credit for your work.

2.  Next, add in your responses to the May 5 assignment.  This would be the two paragraph response to the background article and the three paragraph response to the initial reading assignment.  Clearly label each assignment.

3.  Your next task is to read the article "Ex-child soldier's literary bestseller is 'factually flawed'".  This article addresses the controversy surrounding the writer's depiction of events in A Long Way Gone.   In an extended response, discuss the importance of historical accuracy in memoir.  Do these flaws ruin the essence of the book?  Is the author "lying"?  Discuss ways in which it is possible for more than one interpretation of an event to exist, using the book you are reading as an example.  Include your response, clearly labeled, on your student page.

4.  Finally, let's talk about the book.  You are well into your selection at this point, and many of you have had interesting observations to share with me.  On your student page, make a list of at least five questions you might use for discussion of the first two sections of the novel.  These questions should address the "hows" and "whys" of things rather than the "what" and "when".  What would you like to know more about?  What would you discuss with your classmates or other people reading this title?  Include your questions, clearly labeled, on your student page.

Leftover time?  Here are some things you can/should consider before you do anything else:

  • Check out the extra credit film project.
  • Go to www.freerice.com , work on your vocabulary skills, and donate rice to the UN World Food Bank!
  • Work on the final draft of your Othello essay (due Monday).
  • Read Section 3 of your book (due Tuesday).
